Installing Drawer Fronts
by Lorenz Prem on 01-22-2011 10:34 pm

I recently finished the carcass for a row oflower storage cabinets in my woodshop. The carcass will hold 6columns of 3 drawers stacked on top of one another. The lowestdrawer is designed to store tool boxes. It is almost 18" high. Thefull extension drawer slides make excellent use of the dead spacein the cabinet. The user has easy access to the drawer's contentwhen the slides are fully extended. The middle drawer is 6" high.It will contain containers of screws, material, boxes. The upperdrawer is only 4" high. It will contain frequently used tools

Full length Storage Cabinet
by Lorenz Prem on 01-22-2011 10:10 pm

With all my woodworking equipment squared awayin the new cabinet wall my attention moved to the pile of autoparts, oil, and lawnmower parts. All of these parts are dirty, oily, and unpleasant. I do not want them anywhere near mywoodworking tools. Since I do have a woodshop, I decided to build afull height storage cabinet for just these parts.

The Design

A full height cabinet is no different from a normal cabinet. Theconstruction methods are the same. The full size cabinet is justtaller. It can be built by stacking two

by Lorenz Prem on 01-20-2011 9:02 pm

It is true that one can never have enoughstorage in a shop. I decided to make a dent into the chaos that ismy shop and build storage cabinets.

The cabinets follow the same design as wall cabinets found inkitchens. In fact, these are kitchen cabinets. They are just asmuch practice for my upcoming kitchen remodel as they are anecessity.

The Design

The carcass is made from pre-finished 3/4" plywood. The faceframe and doors are paint-grade poplar.

My design dedicates the entire w

by Lorenz Prem on 01-20-2011 8:47 pm

One way to create visually interesting highquality doors is rail and stile construction. The ease ofconstruction and high quality results of this method have made it afavorite in cabinet shops.

Required Tools

The tools needed to build such a door are a table saw todimension the stock, and a shaper to cut the appropriate profilesin each piece.

Besides a good blade for the table saw, you will need arail&style cutter for your shaper. A multitude of cutters withdifferent profiles are widely avail

Spaceballs for Floating Panels
by Lorenz Prem on 01-06-2011 7:08 pm

I recently discovered Spaceballs as a tool for aligning floating panels.Spaceballs, as the name implies, are small rubber balls that fillthe expansion gap around a panel. The panel compresses the ball.Since there are Spaceballs in the gaps all around the panel, thepanel is pushed into the center. Each ball compresses roughly thesame amount. The panel resting spot becomes the absolutecenter.

Panel expansion is still possible since the Spaceballs can becompressed further if they are subjected to a greater force

Building a Utility Closet
by Lorenz Prem on 10-15-2010 9:43 pm

The water heater in many homes is located in thegarage. Often it is simply attached to one of the walls. When theowners move in stuff starts piling up in the garage. The water heatand the feed pipes soon disappear under a collection of seldom usedthings.

One solution to this problem is to enclose the water heater in autility closet. The closet, which is basically an oversize armoire, physically separates your home's heating appliances from theworkspace that is your garage.

by Lorenz Prem on 09-19-2010 7:46 pm

Everyone has heard the old saying: "You cannever have too many clamps". While I am sure this statement is nottrue at the extremes, it still seems like I have to use everysingle clamp I own at one time or another during a project.

Clamps are one of the most frequently used tools in the shop. It's only fitting store them in a prominent place in the shop. Hereis my design for storing my simple collection of parallel jawclamps.

"Drill/driver OK, reciprocating and circular saws are junk. No torque, circular saw won't cut thru a 2x4, reciprocating won't cut a 4x4 without bogging."
"Indeed, this one is the best 12V driver. Get it. You will not be disappointed."
"I use this one for heavy work. It can do it all. None better."
"Love this Router"
"Great driver with only minor issues. App is limited. The last gen is almost as good, yet a lot cheaper."
"This saw replaced a Delta Unisaw in my shop. It's rock solid, powerful, and well made. Fence rivals Biesemeyer or Unifence. Worth the price, IMHO."
"Excellent performance but tough to use at high speed with soft wood, tends to drive too deep before impact kicks in."
"This is my only true drill. The key-less chuck works flawlessly as does the power/speed switch which is handy for drilling various density material."
"A quality sander that performs well day in and day out. Not the best dust bag, that's minor for me. Fits well in my hand and no fatigue with prolonged use."
"A good option for those looking for their first saw, or those looking to upgrade from a "portable" job site saw. Buy a decent blade and you'll be happy."
